(Grades 11-12) Half Day 120 minutes daily, m-f
This class offers students the opportunity to build a modular house in the woodshop lab. The modular house is a classic cape with timber framed trusses which support the second floor roof. Students participate in every phase of construction, from the mortise and tennon joinery in the timber frame trusses to installing light fixtures. Students learn hand and power tool operation, blueprint reading, framing skills, window and door installation, and woodworking finish skills. The modular house uses the latest building techniques with an emphasis on energy efficient construction. Students work with local electricians and plumbers installing the plumbing and electrical systems. Many second year students move into paid co-op positions with local electricians, plumbers and builders.
Prerequisite: 10 credits on transcript upon entering the program.
Recommended Preparation: Algebra I and Geometry, or similar math experience. Intro to Technology.
Credits: One embedded math credit and five program credits upon completion of the two-year program. Students ean an OSHA 10-hour certification card. College credit is available for this program if students choose to attend Vermont Technical College. Students can earn two national certifications endorsed by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). These certifications will be awarded to students who pass written and performance testing.
