(Grades 11 and 12) Half Day 120 minutes daily, m-f

The Health Careers Program at HCC provides students with a unique and important opportunity to explore a variety of health careers; including the educational/training requirements, roles/responsibilities, and certification/licensure related to the profession.  Students will have exposure to such areas as: athletic training, emergency care, geriatrics, laboratory work, nursing, dentistry, pharmacology, pediatrics, physical therapy, surgical technician, and much more.

Students study human biology and medical terminology. Both areas of study are foundational and essential to any health career/profession. Qualified students may earn college credits form the Community College of Vermont for successful completion of this coursework.

Integrated into Level One are basic healthcare certifications which enable students to pursue entry-level positions in the healthcare field, including: CPR, First Aid and Licensed Nursing Assistant.

Level Two involves further development of theoretical knowledge and exploration in health careers. While a structured job shadowing experience is available to all students, an individual student may seek specialized clinical experience in a particular area of interest through job shadowing or cooperative education opportunities.

Prerequisite: 10 credits on transcript upon entering the program; a “B” average or better in a biology-based science.

Recommended Preparation: Biology and Chemistry, two years of math.

Desirable Qualifications: The ability to work with people of all ages, good communication skills, reliability, self-discipline.
