Hannaford Career Center

AnnaJo Smith is a senior from Vergennes Union High School. AnnaJo is a second year student enrolled in the Agribusiness program at the Hannaford Career Center. Her instructor is Janice Bosworth.

AnnaJo is a member of the Vergennes Chapter of Future Farmers of America (FFA), and is the State FFA Treasurer. As an Agribusiness student, she has participated in: United Way Day of Caring (2 years), a cooperative work experience at Moody-Meadows Farm in New Haven, she’s been an HCC Student Representative, and is a member of National Technical Honor Society. She has been awarded a scholarship to attend the FFA Washington Leadership Conference.

Ms. Smith has also been an outstanding student at VUHS. She has been involved in VUHS Student Council and the VUHS Germany Trip. Outside of school, Anna Jo has taken part in: Addison County Farm Bureau, New Haven Fire Department, Addison County 4-H, National Junior Hereford Society, 4-H National Dairy Leadership Conference.

Next year, AnnaJo plans to attend a four-year college or university to major in Agriculture Education with a minor in Fire Science. We congratulate Anna Jo Smith as the Hannaford Career Center Student of the Month for December, 2010, and wish her continued success in her future endeavors.

Kiera Hoefle is a senior from Middlebury Union High School. She is enrolled in the Design & Illustration program at the Hannaford Career Center. Kiera is a second year student at HCC, having completed the Visual Communications program in the spring. Her instructor for this series has been Lisa Rader.

Through her HCC program, Kiera has been a highly motivated student who always approaches a problem from a number of different perspectives. At Middlebury Union High School, Kiera has been on high honors every semester, has participated in several varsity sports including, basketball, soccer and alpine skiing, and has spent a semester abroad in Spain.

Kiera has participated in Governor’s Institute for the Arts. Kiera will receive dual enrollment college credit in Design & Illustration through the Community College of Vermont.

Next year, Kiera plans to attend a four-year college or university, majoring in Art & Design. We congratulate Kiera Hoefle as the Hannaford Career Center Student of the Month for November, 2010, and wish her continued success in her future endeavors.

Jake Lacey, a 2004 alumnus from Otter Valley Union High School and Addison Repertory Theater’s Performance program, returned to his roots Tuesday, November 23, 2010. He spent the afternoon in A.R.T.’s theater, speaking to the current students about his experiences in college and in landing a job in acting.

Currently, Jake is starring in a new sit-com on ABC on Wednesdays at 8:30pm, called “Better With You.”

Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center students from Automotive Technology, Construction Technology, Culinary Arts, Diesel Power Technology, and Pre-Engineering and Architectural Drafting demonstrated their knowledge at the annual Vermont SkillsUSA competition. This year’s theme was “Champions at Work” and PAHCC students proved they are! They joined students from other Career and Technical Centers at the Sheraton Inn in South Burlington on Tuesday, March 16, 2010.

Gavin Greenewalt, a senior at MUHS, placed first in Computer Assisted Technical Drafting, Secondary Division; while
Bryan Sawyer, an adult student, placed third in Computer Assisted Technical Drafting, Post Secondary Division. This five hour competition included exploded assemblies, dimensioned working drawings, geometric tolerancing, and jig and fixture design. Hand sketching, design, and computer solid modeling skills were emphasized.

Cole Goyette, a senior from Mt. Abraham Union High School placed first and Sean Kingman also a senior from Mt. Abraham placed seventh in the Diesel Equipment Technology Electrical Problem Solving competition. Students were required to identify tools, new parts, and failed parts of a diesel engine. Students were tested on Commercial Driver’s License Pre-Trip Inspection, correctly demonstrate adjustment of a wheel bearing, and complete a written knowledge examination.

Gavin Bicknell, a senior from Vergennes Union High School competed in Commercial Baking. Within three hours, she made a Dutch Apple Pie from start to finish, made one dozen dinner rolls as well as filled puff pastry in three different shapes. She topped it all off with decorating a cake.

Sean Higgins, a senior from Middlebury Union High School competed in Cooking. During a three hour allotment, he de-boned a chicken, prepared potato leek soup, and demonstrated precision knife skills in preparation, planning, and executing a well-balanced meal.

Cody Steele, a senior from Vergennes Union High School and Chris Davis, a senior from Middlebury Union High School competed in the Carpentry skills event. Cody and Chris were required construct a small wood structure by reading and interpreting a blueprint, correctly preparing necessary materials, with the end product properly assembled.

Jacob Ouellette, a senior from Vergennes Union High School and Justin Comes, a senior from Middlebury Union High School competed in the Automotive Service Technology skills event. Jacob and Justin demonstrated written and applied standards based upon task lists authored by NATEF (National Automotive Technicians Education) and ASE (Automotive Service Excellence).

The Hannaford Career Center inducted thirty-five students into National Technical Honor Society on Thursday, March 25, 2010. The ceremony was held in the Middlebury Union High School auditorium. NTHS Advisor, Marie Eddy, conducted the ceremony, aided by current NTHS members Kayla Whittemore, Kali Trautwein, Alexa Clarisse, Lewis Fox, Brittany Nolan and Taylor Pidgeon. Program instructors Woody Danforth, Cheryl Werner, Janice Bosworth, Rick St. Peter, Priscilla Powers, Rita Wells, Julie James, Phil Teer, Mike Kane, Aaron Townshend, Candace Burkle and Steve Small presented the students with their certificates.Director Lynn Coale and NTHS Advisor Marie Eddy presented the students with their honor cords and pins. A dessert reception followed, enjoyed by newly inducted members and their families and friends.

We had a successful Open House on February 11th, with well over 200 people visiting. The energy was high as you walked about the buildings, and there was something interesting to see wherever you went.  The food was delicious, prepared by our Culinary Arts students and served by our Addison Repertory Theater students.

On Tuesday, October 21, 2009 the Arts & Humanities Academy at the Hannaford Career Center had a special guest speaker: Ashley Wolff.  Ashley, a 1974 graduate of Middlebury Union High School, is an artist who has illustrated sixty children’s books.  She is best known for Miss Bindergarten’s Kindergarten and the Stella and Roy series.

Wolff graduated from Rhode Island School of Design and has lived in San Francisco for the last several years.  While she doesn’t anticipate moving back to Vermont, she did share with the students that Vermont is in her bones. Vermont scenes appear in many of her books.

Wolff uses many different styles of illustration, including lino cut, faux lino cut, watercolor, collage, and pastels.  She had a lot of advice for would-be free-lance artists: have a tough skin because you will experience rejection and you need to be willing to try again, be ambitious (always have your portfolio handy) but be humble as well and willing to do grunt work, meet deadlines.

The illustrator of Baby Beluga had three words for the students on being successful as an artist: patience, persistence, and practice.

Every program at the Hannaford Career Center participated in the United Way’s Days of Caring on Thursday, September 17, 2009.   Students fanned out across Addison County working on a variety of projects from landscaping to painting to general cleaning.  The Culinary Arts program participated by preparing lunches for all of the students, which were delivered to their respective worksites.  The day of community service was a positive experience for all!
